A very warm welcome to Edition 2 of Excellence through Learning, the newsletter for the Regional Training Centre network. Whether overseas or in the UK, locally engaged or UK-based, this newsletter is designed to give you an insight into the work of the RTC network, as well as keeping you up-to-date with the latest training news from around the globe.
In this edition of Excellence through Learning we take a look at the highlights of recent regional Training Liaison Officer Conferences, and catch up on the outcomes of the Regional Learning & Development Co-ordinators’ Conference, held in London back in June. There is also an article on Customer Focus management, as well as our usual, light-hearted view of some of the more enjoyable and humorous aspects of RTC life!
It’s now a little over four months since I first set foot in our London offices, to begin my career in the FCO. Meeting a range of other like-minded new entrants during my weeklong induction was an enjoyable (if slightly daunting!) experience. Nevertheless, on opening the infamous brown envelope to discover where I would first be placed, little did I know that my first job would provide me with such a great overview of the FCO at work on a global scale.
My role to date has involved much variety, and many different aspects of RTC -and training-related work- but has never failed to be stimulating and enjoyable. Highlights have included my first overseas trip, to the Pretoria RTC back in August; plus involvement in developing our new Training Needs Analysis tool, and seeing new change training piloted (the latter in a Steven Spielberg-style role as film director!). In fact only yesterday I gave a presentation to a roomful of colleagues, including the Director of HR! I have interacted with many good-humoured and friendly people, and have experienced for myself the wealth of ability the network has at its disposal. It is this last fact that has made the most lasting impression on me in my short time in the job; the outstanding efforts from our talented L&D staff, that make an invaluable contribution to FCO staff development.
I hope you share my enthusiasm at the proposals to expand the network further into Australasia, North Africa and Europe. In its relatively short lifespan the RTC network has been on an incredible journey, and I feel fortunate to be around to witness and participate in our next exciting stages of development.
As always, we would be keen to hear your suggestions for topics to be covered in future editions of Excellence through Learning; please email your thoughts to our fantastic editor Paola Vicente at: rtclima@gmail.com!
